August 11: 9 Tips on Juggling Motherhood and Your Career

Most women believe that Motherhood is one of the most fulfilling journeys you can ever experience in life, but it can be the most exhausting, too. Can you imagine being the one in charge of keeping a tiny human alive and thriving? Yes, it truly is a tough job! Add the task of managing a career into the mix, and you’ll find yourself stretching your limits to its core.

Keep your chin up, mom! When there are so many things vying for your time and attention throughout the day, you may feel as though you’re not excelling in any of your given roles, whether it’s at home or in the workplace, but know that you are not alone.

While the PERFECT work-life balance may feel impossible to attain, you can try these nine tips to maintain your sanity and purpose as a full-time career-woMOM.


Establish a routine

Setting a morning routine can help you start the days out smoothly and get things done faster.

Set your alarm for a time that will allow you and your child to get ready to leave the house at a designated time. Be strategic with your time management. You can also try to do what you can the night before to avoid feeling stressed while getting ready for the day and reduce the risk of being rushed and forgetting essentials.

Determine which tasks to prioritize

Avoid thinking of all the things you need to accomplish soon and learn to focus on action items with the highest urgency, attending to those first. Determine which tasks you want to prioritize for the day, make a list of them, and crossing off as you go. You’ll find yourself feeling satisfied since you’re making progress and reaffirming the fact that you can accomplish multiple tasks in a day, both at work and home.

Work smart

It’s very tempting to take occasional breaks to scroll through your social media if you work in an office or a similar environment, but do your best to resist. While it’s not ideal to skip your coffee and snack breaks, try to avoid personal diversions when not on break. Give your job your full attention when at work, so you can free up the time that should be spent with your family.

Be fully present

If you’re working full-time, we’re pretty sure you only get to spend a few hours with your kids each day. Some days, you might even feel like you hardly get to see them, even if you live in the same house! So, to achieve some sort of work-life balance, be on full-mom mode when you’re at home. Make most of the time you have each day by giving your children undivided attention. Appreciate your precious hours together at all times.

Ask for help

Before motherhood, errands didn’t seem like such a hassle. But now that you have your little bundle of joy, you’ll feel like it’s impossible to squeeze in any of those tasks into your already demanding schedule. And you shouldn’t have to!

Take advantage of services that are available to you. Ask for help when you need it. Learn how to do your shopping online and use various retailers to stock up on your everyday essentials, so you can free up some additional time to spend with your kids.

Get enough zzz

The early stages of motherhood may have left you feeling restless and lacking enough sleep, as nighttime sleep will completely revolve around your baby’s. It’ll have caused you to be exhausted around the clock, what with all the frequent wakings and feedings.

Well, now that you’re back to work and your little one is sleeping much soundly than before, it’s time to get enough rest to increase your productivity. You’ll also have to try sleeping early, so even if you wake up in the middle of the night, you can still get in enough hours of sleep to feel energized throughout the day.

Reevaluate other commitments

Learn to say “no” to people to avoid overloading your schedule and lose time for yourself and your little ones. Of course, you don’t need to turn down every work or social opportunity, but you’ll want to avoid putting so much on your plate that you can’t spend enough quality time with your family.

Say “yes” to commitments that will allow you to bring your kids along, like get-togethers with friends or family, dinners at kid-friendly restaurants, and events that cater to all ages. Doing so will allow you to expose your kids to different experiences and help them develop interests and social skills.

Save some time for yourself

Sneaking in some alone time for yourself is more important than you think. Even if you’d like to spend most of your time outside of work with your family, taking the time to relax and recharge can help you succeed as a working mom. Remember, you need a little break every now and then to avoid feeling overworked and exhausted. You can’t give your all in everything you do if you don’t have anything left in YOU.

Cherish the snuggles

The weeks, months, and years go by so quickly, and when your job takes up most of your time, you’ll find it’s even more important to relish your time off.

Don’t be afraid of slow starts with your kids on the weekend. Take in the morning snuggles, play with toys, read books, and go on walks if the weather allows it. Regardless of what your weekend looks like, it’s important to cherish the time you’re spending together. Kids grow up so fast, so make every moment last.
