July 21: 9 Reasons Why Waking Up Early is the Key to a Happier Life

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” – Ben Franklin.

An overused quote mentioned by children and adults alike, something you’ve probably been hearing almost half of your life. And yet, most of us still choose to become a late riser, especially for night owls who live for staying awake ’til the wee hours of the morning.

Of course, it’s understandable to find climbing out of bed early in the morning to be one of the most difficult tasks a person faces each day, but despite having said this, there’s still a long list of benefits to becoming an early riser. And if you need a little more convincing, here are nine reasons why waking up early may be the key to a HAPPIER LIFE.

Getting a head start

Waking up at the earliest time means you’re starting your day earlier than 99% of the world–hence giving you a good head start in your day. It creates a feel-good factor and a host of positive effects. After all, a good start is half the battle won, and this will motivate you to stay ahead so you can maintain and even widen your lead.

Increasing productivity

Most people’s productivity soar on the days they wake up early. Of course, getting a head start leads to feeling motivated to continue your lead and may result in getting more things done and getting it completed faster. In addition, early mornings create the perfect environment for work due to the peace and quietness it gives.

Punctuality

It’s not uncommon to experience waking up late and having to make a mad rush for an appointment. And we bet being late to anything important doesn’t leave a good feeling in the gut. Being on time is key to making a good impression and serves as a form of respect for the other party. Rather than rushing around every morning and feeling too tired throughout the day, waking up early will give you more time to prepare and be timely.

Self-mastery

Waking up early is practicing self-mastery. To rise earlier than most people means learning to have a hold over your bad habits. Becoming more organized and disciplined means you’ll have mastery of task management and self-management, and these skills will help you gain control over your tasks and yourself rather than looking for the easy way out.

Tranquility

The peace you get in the morning is indescribable, and this tranquility comes in two forms. First, there’s the physical quietness. You are alone with no disturbance. No one’s out on the streets, there’s no traffic on the road, and the birds haven’t even broken into song yet! And then there’s quietness on a mental level. In the early hours of the morning, you are free from unnecessary worries and twisted thoughts. While physical peace is something you get by sleeping late, mental peace only comes from waking up early.

Enjoy that early morning peace and give yourself space to get a fast start on whatever you want to do.

Faster commute

Do you travel to work or school? Commuting during non-peak hours will help you avoid traffic jams and cut down on your time spent traveling, which gives you more time for more important matters.

Enough time for breakfast

Have you found yourself skipping breakfast because you woke up late? Well, waking up early will put an end to that!

As they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Think about it– you slept the whole night without eating, so it’s only proper to have a heavy meal in the morning to have enough fuel for your daily duties and activities. If you wake up early, you’ll have enough time to prepare something heavy and healthy.

Exercise

Do you do your exercises at the end of the day? Do you follow your exercise routine according to plan, or does it get rescheduled due to last-minute changes? An early rise gives you time to exercise in the morning, and you know there’s nothing like a great workout to boost your energy (and your day, too!).

More time to observe your surroundings

Getting up early will allow you to wake up before the world does. Imagine jogging in the wee hours of the morning– when the sky is dark with only a few people and cars on the road– and seeing the whole place come alive. The sky starts to lit up in different shades – first dark blue, then in gradients of purple, red, orange, and yellow, before sunlight starts to envelop the whole place. A beautiful scene you can only experience when you choose to wake up early.
