Avoid letting your paint dry out
Always remember that a half-empty can of paint will inevitably dry out. To avoid this situation, drop some golf balls into the paint can to fill the air space or place plastic wrap under the lid. Seal the can tightly and store the paint can upside down for future use.
Choose the perfect primer
Are you painting new drywall? Use a water-based primer to hide those imperfections and provide an even base before putting on color. If you’re trying to paint paneling, water-damaged, or smoke-saturated walls, it’s best to opt for an oil-based primer.
Make sure not to leave lap marks
Stripes caused by rolling over almost dried-up paint can be a bummer, so keep a wet edge by painting the full height of the wall and then moving over slightly, so you can overlap your last stroke with the next.
Create a modified stirrer to stir paint
Stir your paint more thoroughly by drilling some holes in the stirrer before you start mixing the paint. Those holes will help the paint flow through the stirrer, aerating it like a whisk and stirring it more evenly.
Add that texture!
Are you aiming for a more textured wall? Choose a roller with a longer, 3/4″ nap, which can hold more paint. The nap is the fabric material which covers the roller, and longer naps create more stippling on your wall because of how their fibers distribute paint. Alternatively, using a shorter-nap roller– between 1/4″ and 1/2″ nap– for a smoother finish.
Avoid washing your brushes and rollers
There’s no reason to clean your brushes and rollers if you’re using latex paint, especially if you can’t finish your project in one day. Simply wrap your rollers and brushes in plastic bags or tin foil, put them in the refrigerator, and be sure to let them fully warm back up before using them again.
Deal with those problem tapes
Using older tape can be hard to peel off without tearing or sticking. If your painter’s tape continues to peel (which can be quite a hassle), microwave the whole roll for 10 seconds, and you’re good to go.
Check which kind of paint is on your existing walls
If you’re not sure if your wall’s existing paint is oil or latex, soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and rub it in a small area across the wall. Lates will leave a paint residue on the cotton ball, while an oil-based paint won’t. If it’s the latter, you’ll want to use an oil-based primer before painting.
Buy a paint pen for your DIY project
Buying a paint pen lets you load a bit of new paint for touchups later on. These helpful pens keep the paint inside fresh for about a year once filled. Just remember to shake them well before using them to ensure that the paint comes out smoothly and evenly.
