If there’s one good thing that the past year has taught us, it’s that our health should be our top priority. Ironically, it was also the time when we were left stuck with food that has been in our fridge or pantry for a while, lived a sedentary lifestyle with increased odds of physical activity, excessive eating and sitting, stress, anxiety, and bouts of depression. And now that we’ve rolled into a new year, it’s about time that we get our lives back and start shedding unwanted extra weight before it stays permanently! Yes, ladies and gents, let’s reward ourselves with a renewed sense of purpose and take some time to set goals for a healthier lifestyle for ourselves!
Get started on setting yourself up for success– here are ten easy tips on how you can maintain a healthy lifestyle and overall well-being while staying home and engaging in social distancing:

Watch your weight
Keeping track of your body weight gives you an idea of how much you’re losing or gaining. Make sure you are taking note of your progress but avoid being obsessive about it (a.k.a stepping on the scale every mealtime). Always remember that slow progress is better than no progress at all!

Limit intake of unhealthy foods
Avoid skipping breakfast and always settle for a nutritious meal with more protein and fiber than a calorie-packed snack that will ‘temporarily’ curb your hunger (yes, fight that inner demon!).

Take multivitamin supplements (if necessary)
Taking a daily multivitamin supplement may be best, especially if you do not have access to a wide array of vegetables and fruits or if you have insufficient levels of nutrients. Most micronutrients are vital to your immune system, e.g., vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, and E, as well as zinc, iron, copper, selenium, and magnesium. However, keep in mind that high doses of vitamins can be bad for your health, so always consult a doctor before starting a new supplement.

Stay hydrated
Drink water regularly, and don’t wait until you feel thirsty (by that time, you’ll already be dehydrated!). Keeping hydrated will flush out toxins and help you stay healthy (stay away from sugared beverages, too!).

Be physically active
Do your share of home workouts or do chores and activities to stay physically active. Walking your dog, running outside, cleaning the house, and playing sports are also great alternatives if you don’t feel like doing traditional exercises.

Reduce screen time
Doing exercises can’t immune you from having sedentary time. People who exercise regularly are still at risk for health problems if they spend most of their time sitting behind the computer (or skimming through their phones). Avoid these bad habits by taking short breaks and walking around the house several times a day.

Get enough sleep
Your sleep quality and quantity have a strong connection with your immune system. Get your immune system to function properly by getting at least seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Doing so will also help you avoid crankiness and mood swings in the mornings (and all day for some people!).

Go easy on the alcohol
Always consume alcohol in moderation. Don’t drink more than you can handle, or if you can, stay sober! There are a lot of fun alternatives to drinking, especially if you’re with the family.

Manage your emotions
Mental health is just as important as your physical health. It’s common to have feelings of fear, anxiety, sadness, and uncertainty, especially now that we amidst a pandemic. So, to minimize stress-related weight gain or sickness, find hobbies, chat with your friends, or keep yourself busy to help you manage your emotions. It’s also best to seek professional help if you feel like things are getting out of hand.

Try something new
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! Try new activities, sports, or hobbies that interest you. Even though you feel like things are already good the way it is, there are still so many new things and experiences waiting to be discovered! Keep learning and keep moving forward!
